Interested in flying with us? 

We are so thrilled that you are considering flying for Above the Clouds. Begin by learning about our organization and events on this website.  Read through the requirements to be an ATC pilot and then complete the New Pilot Application (link is below) We will review your information and schedule an interview and tour.  We hope you will volunteer as a non-pilot for your first Dream Flight Day so you can experience the joy first hand. Volunteer your piloting skills to bring joy and hope to a Dream Flyer and his/her family. After a pre-flight briefing with the Dream Flyer and his/her family and friends, you will take the Dream Flyer on an approximately 30 – 45 minute flight. After the flight, Dream Pilots, Dream Flyers, and friends join us for a post-flight celebration in the Pilot Lounge. Learn more about Dream Flyers. 

All operating expenses are eligible for a charitable deduction to the fullest extent permitted by the Internal Revenue Code. 

Volunteer Pilot Requirements 

Above the Clouds requires volunteer pilots to hold a current private pilot certificate (or higher) and a valid BasicMed or Class III medical certificate, and to be current and proficient in the aircraft they fly. Pilots are responsible for determining the safety of each proposed flight, the fitness of the aircraft, and their own proficiency.

Pilot Requirements (Applies to All Pilots)

  • Valid and current private (or higher) pilot certificate, with all class/type ratings and endorsements required for the aircraft flown

  • Valid and current medical certificate (BasicMed or Class III)

  • 50 hours PIC in make and model for singles

  • 100 hours PIC in make and model for turbines and twins

  • 50 hours PIC within the last 12 months, including 10–12 hours PIC in the last 90 days

  • Valid liability insurance policy

  • Completed CORI background check

Additional Requirements – VFR-Only Pilots

  • Minimum of 500 hours PIC experience

Additional Requirements – IFR Pilots

  • Instrument Rating (currency not required)

  • Minimum of 250 hours PIC experience

Aircraft Requirements

  • ASEL, AMEL, and/or Rotorcraft in full compliance with all inspections, ADs, and SEs

  • Clean and presentable (as determined by an Above the Clouds representative)

  • Approved in a visual inspection by an Above the Clouds representative
