April 30, 2013 (Norwood, MA) – Above the Clouds, an innovative non-profit organization operating out of Norwood Memorial Airport in Norwood, Massachusetts, will launch its inaugural “Dream Flight” this Saturday, May 4th, the first major step in its mission to bring joy and hope to seriously ill, disabled, and underprivileged children and teens through the wonder of small aircraft flight.
The first Dream Flyer, a twelve year-old boy, who received a kidney transplant at Floating Hospital for Children at Tufts Medical Center eight months ago, is ecstatic about the opportunity and is eager to take flight. The Dream Flyer program gives seriously ill or disabled children the opportunity to co-pilot a small airplane. Above the Clouds has a squadron of volunteer pilots and dedicated volunteers to assist them in their mission.
“We created this charity out of a desire to marry two passions: aviation and helping ill, disabled and underprivileged children and teens,” said the program’s founder, Gary Oberstein, an instrument-rated pilot and managing partner of Nixon Peabody LLP’s Boston office.
Above the Clouds also runs the Cadet Flyers program, which gives underprivileged teenagers, between the ages of 16 and 18 years, the opportunity to learn to fly. The Cadet Flyers program was launched when they conducted an Aviation Day on April 29th. During the event, seven underprivileged teens spent the day at Norwood Memorial Airport learning about aviation and about the Cadet Flyer Program.
